This is just the kind of situation you want to avoid in Svalbard. This picture memorializes an incident in which it appears that somebody died. The bar in the hotel in Barentsberg. If you have ever been to a provincial Russian town this will look very familiar. Beautiful downtown Barentsberg. It is a very substantial looking settlement.

This building appears only partially inhabited. Well that Russian gingerbread sure looks cute. Ooooooh. Nice. We like Soviet murals. And this is a cool looking one.

More photos of Barentsberg. For what it's worth. We did nearly kill ourselves getting here. The Russian consulate. Svalbard is under Norwegian law, but the territory is open to all for purposes of work. And the Russians are very serious about keeping a presence here. Here we are with Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov AKA Lenin. Perhaps one of the most northern of all Lenin statues.
